RiceApps
About
RiceApps is the home of experiential learning. Our mission is to foster teams of Rice students to build real world software projects.
Every year, 50 students work together to build project from conception to deployment for the Rice community or a non-profit organization. Previous projects include:
- Rice Public Art for the Moody Center for the Arts
- Externship matching algorithm for the Rice Center for Career Development
- Matching software for Hives for Heroes, a Rice founded non-profit supporting veterans.
- iOS App for Second Servings to help distribute surplus food.
- Hatch, which helps students plan out their academic semester
- Text chat bot for the Patient Discharge Initiative.
- Carpool (in development), a web app to help students find people to split a ride with.
- Recipie sharing platform for Houston Food Bank (in development).
In the process students learn software engineering best-practices, such as agile development, git, React, Express, and more.
Additionally, our summer program Open Source Accelerator (OSA) takes on 40 Rice students with limited software development experience, and pairs them with upperclassmen mentors to help them learn how to build web applications. Here are the outcomes from summer 2021:
- Before the start of the program, only 33.3% of participants indicated they were“confident in their ability to design and build their own project.” After the program, 90.5% felt confident.
- Before, only 38.1% of participants indicated they understood the basics of web development. After, 90.5% understood.
- Before, only 4.8% of participants indicated they did not know how to use React — an industry-standard web development technology. After, 95.2% indicated they knew React.
Ultimately, we provide educational benefit to the Rice CS community.
