Rice Coalition on Hunger and Homelessness

Rice Coalition on Hunger and Homelessness

About

The mission of Coalition Rice is to develop service and advocacy programs for the homeless and economically disadvantaged of Houston through a combination of direct relief efforts, long-term reincorporation projects, and on-campus educational events.

We host several regular events that encourage our members to think critically about poverty and homelessness.

  • Sandwich Pack Preparation: We collaborate with local shelters (ex. Emergency Aid Coalition) each semester to prepare hundreds of sack lunches and snack packs.
  • Off-Site Events: Once a semester, we partner with a local organization to plan an off-site service event during which volunteers provide direct relief to the surrounding Houston community.
  • Panel Events: We host panel events that feature professors, social workers, and public figures who are knowledgeable about homelessness and poverty in Houston. These events provide Rice students with valuable insight into how the Houston community is currently developing and implementing long-term solutions to homelessness.
  • Insurance Initiatives: We partner with Montrose Grace Place to assist members of Houston's homeless community with applications to government sponsored programs such as Medicaid.
